Eastern Shore Vet Hospital

WHO WE ARE:

Eastern Shore Veterinary Hospital , also known as ESVH, is the “sister” hospital to our Dartmouth location. This hospital was started in 1979 by Drs. Ian McKay and Jack Cameron to provide quality veterinary service to the animals of the eastern shore region. The clinic was a separate building until 1988, when it was moved into the Lakeview Shopping Centre. The hospital grew with the surrounding communities and underwent an expansion in 2002.

The ESVH is staffed by 3 veterinarians (Drs. Frances Minty, Shelagh Cantley & Tricia Horsman), our animal health technician/office manager Kim macAskill, animal health technician Margaret Parusel, 2 receptionists (Rebecca Fear & Susan Corkum), a part-time animal health technician (Leanne Currie) and 2 veterinary assistants (Angela Pindham & Holly MacNeil). We often have veterinarians and other staff from the Dartmouth Veterinary Hospital when needed. You will also meet our resident cat Daisy, when you visit. Daisy likes to greet our patients when they arrive and supervise the reception area (and catnip supply).

We also provide veterinary care to injured wildlife and will examine/treat any wild animal or bird that is brought in to the ESVH. The injured wildlife are then transferred to the Hope for Wildlife Centre in Seaforth for further rehabilitation and eventual release.

At ESVH, we offer a complete range of services in veterinary medicine & surgery, and maintain a continuous commitment to providing the best quality of care in a compassionate and caring environment. We strive to maintain high standards with ongoing continuing education through conferences, professional journals and from a veterinary website called Veterinary Information Network. This website has up to date treatment standards and access to specialists in all areas of veterinary medicine. Our hospital boasts an intimate and comfortable setting with a warm and inviting staff. Your pets are guaranteed the best of care.

EXAMINATION
We maintain two examination rooms - canine & feline, at our hospital. All veterinarians in our practice have a standard examination procedure that covers all areas of your pet's anatomy where possible.

LABORATORY

We maintain on site equipment to carry out a number of diagnostic tests, including complete blood chemistries, urinalysis, complete blood counts, fecal examinations, as well as serological testing for heartworm, tick borne diseases, feline leukemia and immunodeficiency viruses. We also use the diagnostic laboratories at the Atlantic Veterinary College , and several other outside laboratories for many other procedures. These samples are sent by courier and results are returned by e-mail or fax. We are also able to trabsmit electrocardiograms veterinary cardiologists for analysis. We receive a complete cardiology report on the patient via fax or a phone call.

RADIOLOGY
We have a complete radiology room and produce high quality images used in the diagnostic process.

Our Staff are trained in radiology safety and proper handling of our patients during procedures.

DENTISTRY
Veterinary dentistry is an area where rapid change has taken place over the last few years. We are able to do complete dental prophylaxis, including proper cleaning with an ultrasonic unit, probing, polishing, fluoride treatment, complete charting and dental extractions when necessary.

ANESTHESIA AND SURGERY
Surgery is an integral part of our practice and is performed under sterile conditions. The safety of our surgical patients, young and old, is enhanced with presurgical physical and laboratory examination, modern anaesthetic equipment and careful monitoring (including pulseoximetry, blood pressure and thermal support) and your veterinarians and registered veterinary technicians during surgery and throughout recovery. Nursing care is a high priority, and we pride ourselves on our commitment to analgesia (pain control) , which all patients receive post-surgically.
